1 1/2 cups warm water
1 pkg dry yeast
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
4 cups flour
1 Tbs sugar
1 Tbs shortening
Dissolve yeast in water, add sugar and shortening then the flour sifted with baking powder and salt.
Mix well and knead. Set aside in bowl with cloth cover for 1 hour(to rise).
Roll dough to a little less than 1/4 inch cut into triangle or rectangles(larger~ about 4 inches long) fry in hot shortening.
Note; Fry only a couple at a time, so fat stays hot, if it is hot they will puff up and become hollow.
Also change out fat if cooking very many.
Drain on paper towels. Dough may also be frozen, makes approx 20 Sopas.
Serve warm with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar on top or my favorite; warm with honey as a side to chile.

This has been my favorite dessert since I was a kid. To this day, my mom still tells stories of how she would come home from work exhausted and I would beg her to make these until she caved! I am going to try out this recipe for my family this weekend. Thanks for sharing!
ok now you are just teasing me!!! I am stopping by Tennessee on my next trip for dessert!!! lol
your friend in Charlottesville
The bigger question is... WHO CARES? Why are you posting #$%^&&% recipes on a real estate blogging platform? Are you THAT bored? Are you THAT unprofessional? Is that what you want your clients to see? Are you just blogging for points?
It's THIS type of garbage that is diluting the effectiveness and quality of Active Rain.
Paul,
Your rude comment shows YOUR unprofessionalism and lack of respect for your peers by commenting something so rude on their blog. IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT YOUR CLIENTS TO SEE? WHAT A JERK YOU ARE? You're obviously a newbie.
And YOUR comment is the type of garbage that COULD dilute the effectiveness and quality of Active Rain. I don't see it being diluted now, it has been very effective for me. Go somewhere else, we don't want people like you here. You're dismissed.
Well done, Vanessa, well done. And the recipe looks good as well.
P.S. Go Jennifer!
Clarification;
I have chosen to leave "Paul"s post here not to incite an AR riot but because I believe in the freedom to disagree. I don't have a problem with someone not liking me or what I say(write) and I will not delete opposing views just because they don't agree with me. That diversity is what makes this community and this Country as a whole something to fight for. I simply would appreciate knowing who is yelling at me. lol. So, Paul if you read this, feel free to email me and tell me off. No problem..it is really not about you anymore, but about integrity and honesty.
Vanessa,
He's just jealous that he didn't think of the recipe first:)
I LOVE sopapillias & I have never looked at a recipe for them so thanks for sharing this! :)
I made them last night and they were FABULOUS! ( I ate WAY TOO many!!) Have to do 5 miles on the treadmill now!! (yeah right!)
I am going to make "honorary" New Mexicans out of all of you!
:.)
I have no issues with recipes...I do have issues with jokes that are stolen from other sites and aren't the original posters material.
